 Back to Roots : Workshop with School Children
     
 
A three day workshop was held between 17th and 19th April at the Oxford Bookdtore at Park Street to orient school children on our folk heritage. Children watched a documentary on Jhumur, heard Fakiri songs, interacted with Chau dancers. Theatre activities were used to build their communication skills. On the third day the children staged their own productions.

We welcome you to join a community festivity at Holi this year (March 10th to 12th). Palas Parvan is celebrated every year for three days at Deulghata at Joypur in Purulia. Palas and Simul trees in the banks of Kasai burst into a fiery red. Throughout the moonlit evening and night of Dol Purnima folk dancers and singers dance and sing for three days.     more.....

POTential , An effort to explore
     
     
 

“POTential , An effort to explore” is a unique and innovative interdisciplinary art project by banglanatak dot com with support of the Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India and in collaboration with ICCR. POTential is creating a platform for exchange, assimilation and innovation. East meets West. Contemporary meets Folk traditions. The medium of work of the six artists who presently live and practice at London is video, photography, installation and performance. They specialize in creating visual imageries using new media art practices. POTential promises to be a unique cultural confluence where eighteen Patuas from Bengal with their scroll paintings and songs (Paer Gaan) will work with the installation artists

We are organizing a one day unique folk festival at ten district towns of West Bengal. Performing folk art forms being showcased are Chau, Jhumur, Baul, Domni, Patchitra and Gambhira. Patachitra products and Chau masks will be sold in the festival.

• In April,2008 we received the UNFPA – LAADLI media award for Gender Sensitivity,2007 for Best Community Theatre Project in Eastern India.

• Our Director Amitava participated in Times of India’s Lead India contest in 2007 and was declared First Runners-up of the Kolkata Chapter. Amitava is also awarded with Chevening Gurukul scholarship 2008 for leadership and excellence from London School of Economics.

• We received Civil Society Award 2006 for outstanding contribution in HIV/AIDS communication using Art & Culture by UNAIDS, NACO and SAATHI.

• Study to assess utilization of Twelfth Finance Commission Grants to Panchayats in West Bengal, Orissa, Chhatisgarh with special focus on improvement in sanitation and drinking water supply (supported by MoPR).

• Advocacy campaign and developing ground communication mechanism for achieving TSC goals at Rajasthan (funded by Dungarpur District Water and Sanitation Committee).
