  Kolkata Urban Services for the Poor (KUSP)  
     
  KUSP targets improving the quality of life and opportunity for 2.4 million poor people in Kolkata Metropolitan Area. To mobilise community participation a campaign was undertaken in the Nagarpallis of Bhadreswar, Chandannagar, New Barrackpore and Kamarhati.  
     
  Awareness Campaign  
  Interactive street theatre shows and talking doll shows were held to build awareness on :  
 
Adopting positive behaviour for creating healthy living conditions.
Community owned management of community assets and promoting well-being in their neighbourhood.
Opportunities and possibilities for empowerment of women.
Measures being taken to improve facilities for health, education, vocational training, solid waste disposal etc.
   
 
  Skill Building Workshops  
  The municipalities have created community based governance structure. Neighbourhood groups(NHGs) have been formed with poor women from the Nagarpallis (slums). One NHG represents around 40 families.Neighbourhood Committees (NHC) have been formed at ward level. They are led by Resident Community Volunteers (RCVs). Community Development Societies (CDS) have been formed with RCVs from 10 -12 wards.
 
  CDS members, health and literacy workers and municipality staff participated in skill building workshops to learn how to use culture based approach to build dialogue and promote participation by the beneficiaries. They were also trained in participatory planning. Profile of participants was as follows:  
 
Bhadreswar : Members of CDS, RCVs, Health and literacy workers, Municipality Staff.
Chandannagar : Health worker, SSA worker, Voluntary worker, Members of CDS, SJSRY groups, Nagorik Committee.
Kamarhati : Members of CDS, Ward Committee, Pashchim Banga Bigyan Samity, SJSRY groups , RCVs, IPP VIII - health worker, Literacy worker, Municipality Staff.
New Barrackpore : Members of CDS, SJSRY groups, RCVs.
 
   
 
 
  Kolkata Environmental Improvement Project (KEIP)  
     
  KEIP aims at welfare and well being of the people of Kolkata especially the poor through an improved urban environment, equitable access to municipal services and effective municipal management .Participation of community is critical for the success of the project. Stakeholder (community) consultation intervention was undertaken in 6 slums in Wards 6, 7, 11, 55, 73, 85 in early 2005. Currently social development work is being undertaken in Wards 38 and 70.  
     
  Awareness Campaign  
 
Street theatre shows and talking doll shows are being held to build awareness on health issues and mobilise community participation in maintenance and management of community assets.The messages imparted include:
Immunise children to prevent diseases.
Garbage spreads diseases.
Open defecation pollutes the environment.
Take ownership of the community assets.
Transect walk for identifying needs
 
     
  Capacity Building Workshops  
 

In workshop the participants are oriented on the importance of their participation in planning, maintenance and management of development work in the slums. Field committees are being formed with representatives of user groups. Councillors and KEIP representatives are also part of these groups. The user groups will take leadership in improving quality of life.

 
     
  Post Campaign Initiatives by the Community  
 
Participants installed buckets for garbage disposal near washing spaces to avoid litter.
Letter boxes installed in site offices are being used to collect suggestions and complaints.
Participants have identified locations where bins need to be placed.
At Ghoshbagan, community has taken the initiative to get rid of stray dogs.
