Research is integral to our
communication and capacity building programmes. We use a
mix of quantitative and qualitative approaches to understand
the local issues and concerns related to the project objectives.
A variety of techniques like focus group discussions, questionnaire
based surveys, semi structured interviews, Key informant
interview, rapid appraisal methods, direct observation and
theatre based approaches like invisible theatre and forum
theatre are used. Post campaign surveys are undertaken for
impact assessment.

| Violence against Women and Children : Unifem |
 |
Goa, the land of beautiful beaches, is an extremely popular destination for tourists from different parts of the world. Unfortunately a serious area of concern is the proliferation of incidents of violence against women and children, drug abuse and crime. We are undertaking an innovative research on the vulnerabilities of women and children with community participation. The goal is to get community feedback on area wise driving factors and identify ways to combat increase in sex tourism and trafficking. Interactive street theatre shows in Konkani, Hindi and Marathi are being held in beaches, jetties, markets, bus stands, schools to build awareness on the issue. The shows are creating a public platform for discussion and providing insight into local push and pull factors.

| Understanding causes and
consequences of TIPS |

We are carrying out a collaborative
research with participation of local community on
emerging vulnerabilities leading to trafficking in
children and women in the Eastern Himalaya region
including Darjeeling, Dooars and Sikkim. The goal
is to research ways of bringing about safe migration
and build structures for protection of women and children
by getting an insight into the perspectives of the
vulnerable segments of people in the region. We have
undertaken an innovative approach of using interactive
street theatre shows to create public forums for discussion
on the issue.

| Revival and Revitalization
of Folk Art and Culture |

A study is being undertaken
in Malda, Purulia, Bankura, Nadia, Purba and Pashchim
Medinipur to draw up an action plan for reviving folk
based performing arts and painting as a means for
sustainable livelihood. This is part of an innovative
project undertaken by Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre
(EZCC) to improve the socio-economic conditio and
living standard of folk artists and artisans in ten
districts of West Bengal and Orissa

| Rural Non Farm Sector in Murshidabad
district |
 |
| A study was
undertaken on behalf of NABARD to map the rural non farm
sector industries in 26 blocks of Murshidabad . The study
was carried out using qualitative research methods as
well as secondary data analysis. High growth, high share
and emerging sectors were identified. Detailed block level
action plan for promoting RNFS was drawn up. |

| Process Documentation: Cooked
mid day meal programmes in primary schools |
 |
| .A study
was undertaken to document various processes involved
in implementation and management of cooked mid day meal
(MDM) programme in Government run primary schools in West
Bengal. The overall impact of the pilot initiative in
Jalpaiguri, Bankura, Birbhum, Pashchim Medinipur and Murshidabad
was assessed. A comparative analysis of the systems and
procedures operational in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Chattisgarh
and Madhya Pradesh was carried out as part of this study.
Recommendations for implementation of the programme in
all districts of West Bengal were given. Best practices
with regards to procurement, monitoring and management
observed in the different districts as well as other states
were highlighted.. |

Marketing Initiative |

| A study was
carried out on marketability of the products of self help
groups (SHGs) in Purba Medinipur and North 24 Parganas.
The scope of work included identifying products, analyse
market potential and recommend ways to improve marketability. |

| Study on Socio-economic Contributions
of Nalco in Damonjodi Sector |
 |
| A study
was undertaken to assess the socio-economic contributions
of Nalco in Damonjodi sector where there are bauxite mines
at Panchpatmali and alumina plant near Simliguda. 600
families from 14 villages were displaced to set up the
refinery and the adjoining township. 4 more villages were
partially affected. The study covered the following aspects

villages with 53 hamlets. |
