Today health care
has a much broader perspective. As per WHO, ‘Health is
a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being -
and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity’. Complex
links between social, economic, ecological and political factors
affect the standards of living and other aspects of social well-being
that influence human health. We have undertaken campaigns on
general health and hygiene, safe motherhood, immunization, sanitation
and prevention of diseases to mobilize people to prevent diseases
through positive and healthy behaviour. Capacity building workshops
have been held to train grass root health workers, AWWs and
ANMs in mobilizing behavior change and building awareness on
heal;th issues. The workshops have also targeted developing
local leadership in building healthy communities and thereby
healthy environment. |

Pregnant women, lactating
mothers and young children under the age of five years are extremely
vulnerable to diseases. Street theatre shows held in villages,
schools and fairs have built awareness on proper nutrition and
food habit, immunization, pre-natal and post natal Care, institutional
delivery, contraception etc. |

Street theatre and
talking doll shows held in urban slums targeted mobilizing the
residents to stop open defecation and littering. The theatre
shows in rural areas depicted how : |
|
| |
| • |
Open defecation and littering
spread diseases. |
| • |
One time investment in a latrine
saves money continuously spent in treatment and medication
. |
| • |
Panchayats offer affordable schemes
for the poor. |
| • |
Latrine at home saves the women in
family the shame of defecating in public. |
|
|
| |
|
|
| |
Myths and Misconceptions Addressed |
|
| |
| • |
Latrines lead to foul
smelling gas. |
| • |
The pits are not of sufficient depths. |
| • |
Latrines are profane. |
| • |
Latrines are infested with rats. |
| • |
Low cost latrines do not last long. |

We have undertaken
campaigns to build awareness on DOTS to cure TB, prevention
of Malaria, Pulse Polio and routine immunization etc. During
the campaigns it was interesting to note that beside lack of
awareness , myths and prejudices have clouded people’s
perceptions and opinions. In some cases , side effects deter
people. Some parents do not give their children full dose of
RI because of fever. Girls and pregnant women often do not take
IFA tablets, as they are afraid of side effects. |

Questions raised by the audience
during campaign on Pulse Polio Immunization : |
|
| |
| • |
Why
should I get my child immunized so many times? Does immunization
actually work? |
| • |
Why is the Government
so focused on this issue when other problems like lack
of healthCare facilities or roads are scarcely given any
attention? |
| • |
Is the same vaccine
used for Muslims, or are they given a different one which
leads to sterility ? |
| • |
Why should all children
be immunized on the same day? |
